Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and what better way to spread the love than with a fun, creative art project that kids can enjoy? Today, I’m excited to share a simple, yet beautiful craft: Melted Crayon Hearts. We have done many melted crayon projects over the years and this is a great one to add for a timeless way to make beautiful marbled art!

You can create a twist by adding twine and hanging on the windows to create beautiful suncatchers! We made this Valentine craft super easy by including a FREE printable heart template in various sizes!

How to Make Melted Crayon Hearts

  1. Prepare your Wax Paper: Start with a large piece of wax paper and fold it over along with folding the sides up about an inch over so there are no loose ends.
  2. Shaving the Crayons: Open up your wax paper. Use a pencil or crayon sharpener to create shavings from your wax crayons. Spread these shavings in a thin, even layer over one-half of your wax paper. Don’t overcrowd as they will melt into each other.
  3. Seal the Shavings: Carefully fold the unshaved half of the wax paper over the shavings.
  4. Ironing: Before you start ironing, protect your surface by placing kraft or butcher paper paper down. Lay your wax paper creation on it and cover with another sheet of kraft paper. With your iron set to medium heat, gently press over the covered wax paper. Keep checking as you go and stop once all the crayon shavings have melted. Allow it to cool down after ironing.
  5. Creating the Hearts: Once your sheet is cool, place our heart template over the wax paper and cut trace out hearts. You can also alternatively cut the hearts from the template and use those individually on the melted crayon. Use scissors to cut out the hearts.
  6. Attach Twine: Tape twine or string on the back of each heart. Your Melted Crayon Hearts are ready to be hung and displayed!
