We love a good squeegee paint project and have done many of them in the past! The reveal is always the best part with all the colorful varieties you can make! I recently came across an art trend on TikTok where people are doing a new type of squeegee painting where there is a hidden drawing on the canvas only until you reveal it with the squeegee! This was a total gamechanger and only added to the fun of painting with a squeegee, which we already loved doing!

How do you do create this fun squeegee paint drawing reveal?

The only thing you will need differently from regular squeegee painting is a black pen. We used a micro tip pen like this but you can also use a black Sharpie or any black marker, but I would recommend it’s not a washable one as the ink needs to visibly black.

Think of a cute drawing, object or item. It can also be a face or features that accompany your paint. We deciced to draw happy and grump cats (because who doesn’t love funny looking cats 🙂 but use your child’s imagination!

Then use your black marker to draw on a canvas. You’ll need to then decided what primary color you want that object to be and then add globs of paint to cover it. Then use a stick, toothpick, or something with a small tip to spread the paint around your object.

The last step is adding paint all around your canvas. Think about your scene for example if you drew a rainbow, would the top be yellow for sun and blue for a sky? You can also think of symmetry, adding the same color paint to either end of your object.

What if I don’t have a canvas?

If you don’t have a canvas don’t fret! We’ve tried this on watercolor paper and it works just fine too! We don’t recommend copy paper or cardstock, the paint is too gloppy and won’t absorb well and likely the paper will eventually wear down and tear.

What kind of paint is best for squeegee painting?

We used acrylic paints here but you we’ve also tried cheap inexpensive washable paints like tempera paints which are so great for using with kids!

What if I don’t have a squeegee?

If you don’t have a squeegee, you can do this type of scrape painting with anything that is wide and flat! Think cereal box cardboard, the flap from a cardboard box, or thick cardstock. We’ve tried all of those and they work fine too!

INSTRUCTIONS For Squeegee Painting:

(watch the video in this post)

Step 1. Decide what you will draw and use your black marker to draw on the canvas.

Step 2. Cover your drawing with paint and use a toothpick or stick to make sure the object is covered.

Step 3. Add drops of paint all around the canvas.

Step 4. Place your squeegee at the top and Squeegee the paint down slowly to reveal your drawing!

Tips: Place your canvas over a paint drop cloth or newspaper to contain the mess. It also helps to place newspaper or parchment paper right under the bottom of the canvas to catch the paint excess when you squeegee down.
