We had so much fun with our rainbow scrape painting that we decided to explore a variation using a handy and common household tool, the squeeguee!

This vibrant rainbow squeegee painting method is inspired by Make It Your Own’s squeegee painting tutorial. We adjusted by using various colors of the rainbow.

With National Reading Month in March, this fun process art for kids paired beautifully with our children’s book, My Color Is Rainbow about love, kindness and acceptance.

Read to your child how we are all made up of brilliant “colors” and then squeegee paint a beautiful rainbow!

Rainbow Squeegee Painting – Materials:

Squeegee
Watercolor paper or blank canvas
– Paints in rainbow colors (we used tempera paints in squeeze bottles to make it easier for little hands to apply)
– Drop cloth or butcher paper

Instructions:

Step 1. Line your surface with butcher paper or a drop cloth. Add your watercolor paper or blank canvas on top. Add drops in rainbow formation as well as lines and squiggles of paint drops all over.

Step 2. Using your squeegee, scrape off the paint going in one direction. Wipe off excess paint. Repeat in different patterns across your paper or canvas.

Look at those vibrant rainbow colors and patterns! The kids had so much fun reading My Color Is Rainbow and then making this colorful rainbow.

You can hang it up as art, cut into handmade cards, or use as colorful wrapping paper.
