It’s no surprise that we are huge fans of squeegee art projects around here. We’ve created anything from abstract rainbow squeegee art to Easter squeegee eggs and Halloween squeegee pumpkins!

Today, we’ve got a super adorable and clever squeegee art project kids will love. This rainbow Cat Squeegee Art is irresistibly cute.

The clever part is the ears that show up when the paint scrapes down!

This project is not only a blast to do, but it also ends with an adorable piece of art that your kids will be proud to display. Of course you can make your cats any color but we love a good rainbow art project around here so went with that!

What if I don’t have a squeegee?

Not to worry, you just need a sharp (but safe edge) such as an old ruler or piece of cardboard. Just make sure you scrape slowly and deliberately so the paint will come down as you want it to appear.

If holes appear in your art, not to worry! A sponge paint brush can be used to dab missing pieces of paint.

Cat Squeegee Art – Materials

  • White cardstock
  • Paint in the colors of the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple) We LOVE these flowy paints perfect for paint scraping, but they are a bit pricey. However a little goes a long way!) You can use cheaper acrylic or tempera paints in a pinch.
  • A squeegee or cardboard scraper
  • Black marker
  • Dropcloth or old newspaper to lay down

How to make Cat Squeegee Art

Step 1: Create the cat’s ears: You’ll squeeze out paint in an upside-down trapezoid shape minus one side. You don’t need to layer the paint on too thick but the lines need to be even thickness for best results.

Step 2: Make all the colors of the rainbow: Create the painted shape for all the colors of the rainbow. We alternated the heights so the cats could be different heights.

Step 3: Squeegee Time: Note if you make all the cats in one swoop like we did, you’ll need a squeegee as long as how many cats you have lined up! If you want to do one at a time, you can as well. Just make sure to clean off your squeegee before the next color paint.

All you need is to squeegee straight down and you will see the cat’s shape magically appear with ears!

Step 4: Add the Details Once the paint dries, it’s time to bring your cat to life. Use a black marker to add face details.

This is the time to be creative! You can dress up your cat with bows or add glitter, buttons or sequins to make him shine!

And there you have it – an array of rainbow cats that look like they’ve jumped straight out of a magical world! This simple and fun project is a great way to introduce kids to easy and simple art.  The best part? Each piece will be unique, just like our furry pets 🙂
