Make gorgeous straw-painted flowers with just paint and paper.
Need a fun, mess-free art project that even little hands can master? This straw flower painting is as simple as it is beautiful. With just a paper straw, some paint, and a little creativity, kids can stamp out vibrant blooms that look like bursts of flower colors! Perfect kids art for spring, Mother’s Day, or just a quiet afternoon activity, this project turns an everyday straw into an unexpected art tool.
Straw Flower Painting – Materials
Paper straws (sturdy paper ones work well)
Scissors
Paint (we used pink and yellow acrylic)
Paintbrush
Thick cardstock or watercolor paper
Green paint for the stems
How to paint with straws
Step 1: Take a paper straw and make small cuts (about 1 to 1.5 inches long) around one end to create fringe. Gently press and fan the fringe outward to form a flower shape.
Step 2: Pour paint onto a palette or plate. Dip the cut end of your straw into the paint, ensuring the fringes are coated. Press firmly onto the paper and lift straight up to stamp your flower shape. Stamp a few times to make your flower full.
Step 3: Once the pink paint is dry, use a small brush or cotton swab to dab a yellow dot in the center of each flower.
Step 4: Use green paint or a marker to draw stems downward from each flower. You can add leaves or even a vase if you want!
Final Thoughts
This project encourages fine motor skills and turns basic supplies into beautiful art! Each flower is unique, and the finished art makes a great handmade card, frameable artwork, or thoughtful gift. Straw painting is fun for all ages, easy to prep, and always a hit.
