How do you set up this nature watercolor painting for kids?

We highly recommend painting outside with a canvas paint drop cloth or disposable tablecloth or newspaper laid down. Watercolor does stain hands! So if you’re worried just use disposable gloves. If a little paint doesn’t bother you, the paint will wash off over time with soap and water.

Although we’ve made our own watercolor spray paints before we love these convenient watercolor spray bottles. They come in various colors and are just the right size for kids to hold and spray!

You can also save money by buying liquid watercolors in bulk and empty mini spray bottles.

Make sure to not spray anywhere you don’t want to get bits of watercolor spray! We did find that the sprays we used are waterproof when they come into contact with gravel, rocks and natural materials. We were able to hose down the outside without any permanent stains.

Tips to make this leaf art for kids a success!

Definitely lay down a canvas drop cloth to contain any colored spray from getting everywhere.

If you have a light breeze, use masking tape to tape down your watercolor paper.

Have scissors, leaves, rocks and other nature items all gathered so kids can easily create their own nature canvases.

If your leaves or foliage are curled up, lay them between a book to flatten out first so the nature prints will be most visible.

The most important tip is to have fun and use your imagination! There is not right or wrong way to create this painting with a twist for kids!
