THE SCIENCE OF RAISING HAPPY KIDS

If you ask people, you’ll generally find that they want to live happier lives, but what are some of the tangible benefits that happy lives can provide and how can you get there? Happify is an app that provides games and motivational tasks based on positive psychology to make you happier. They created an interesting infographic that brings together a number of different studies that tie happiness of kids and their family units to positive impacts in the child’s life.

For example, a study showed that kids who have nurturing and supportive moms have a 10% larger hippocampus (the part of the brain that regulates stress and memory) by the time they are school aged. Some facts are also eye-opening – such as the fact that kids have 8 hours fewer unstructured free time than they had 20 years ago, which means less time to play, explore and create. One reassuring point that stands out is that kids are pretty resilient, which we know, but it’s good to see it laid out in a factual manner.
