DIY NO-SEW FELT RAINBOW UNICORN COSTUME FOR KIDS

The Halloween costume fun continues (check out the Dragons Love Tacos book-themed costumes we shared last week).

We’re thrilled to be collaborating this year with our talented art teacher contributor John Lavelle from The Art Dream. We’re all about no-sew felt costumes this Halloween so we’ll be sharing 3 adorable costumes to make for your kids that are simple and sweet.

P.S. Check out our new Send a Unicorn Boxes!

The first one up is this brilliantly colored felt unicorn costume with rainbow mane.

Read more below for all the details to make this stunning costume!

No-Sew Felt Rainbow Unicorn Costume – Materials:

– 36″ felt, preferably from a fabric store, in various colors and white

– Fabric scissors

– Hot glue gun

– Thin and thick ribbon

– Velcro

– Headband

– Fiber fill

– Spray glue

– Iridescent glitter

– Cape Template (download free printable HERE)
– Unicorn Horn Template (download free printable HERE)

Instructions:

Step 1. Trace and cut out my horn and ears pattern from white and pink felt. You’ll need two of each piece for the ears.

Step 2. Roll up the horn and form a cone shape, hot glue it together. Fill the horn generously with fiber fill. Hot glue a piece of thin ribbon to the bottom of the horn and wrap it toward the tip, pulling firmly to create the bulges. Seal the bottom of the cone with hot glue.

Step 3. For the ears I simply sprayed the pink pieces with spray glue and dusted them with iridescent glitter, you can skip this if you choose. Hot glue the pink pieces to the white pieces. Dab a little glue on the front of the ear and fold up, pinching the bottom until it dries well.

Step 4. Hot glue the horn and the ears to a headband.

Step 5. For the mane I cut 18″x 36″ pieces of felt in 7 different colors.

*Keep in mind that using more felt makes the costume heavy and more bulky, you may want to limit your mane to just 3 or 4 colors.

Place the felt evenly on top of each other gluing them all together straight down the middle.

Step 6. Cut strips along both sides of the felt. You may want to draw some guidelines down the center of the mane.

Step 7. Hot glue the piece of felt on the top straight down the middle, pinch and hold creating a part.

Step 8. For the cape, refer to the template for a pattern suggestion. You want to cut a semi circular shape 20″ from the center to the edge. Cut two pieces for the hood. I suggest you trace a hoodie you own.

Step 9. Cut a curved shape for the neck, the length should match the length of the neck of the hood.

Step 10. Glue the two hood shapes together along the curved edge. Then glue the hood to the cape.

Step 11. Attach the mane to the hood using hot glue or safety pins.

Step 12. Use a piece of velcro to make the clasp of the cape. Add details to make your costume unique, like a ribbon.

Step 13. For the skirt, cut 3 pieces of felt about 24″ in length in various heights. Glue the shortest piece of felt to a long piece of thick ribbon then followed by the next biggest then the largest piece.

Here is the final costume laid out:

Details of the felt skirt and horn below. The skirt is optional but adds a colorful touch to the unicorn costume ensemble.

Instead of using velcro to close the cape, you can also tie a ribbon around the neck, as shown below.

Check back in the next couple of weeks for two more adorable no-sew felt costumes in collaboration with The Art Dream – a candy and donut!
