RAINBOW SHAMROCK STRING ART

Are you looking for a super fun St. Patrick’s Day craft for kids that they are going to love? If so, you’re not going to want to miss out on this Rainbow Shamrock String Art. It’s the perfect craft to showcase the skills and creativity of your child and also work on their fine motor skills, too.

This post was originally published 3/5/18 and republished 2/18/2020.

Using the colors of the rainbow makes this craft so colorful and fun! (But if your child really doesn’t want to use these colors, they can use whatever colors they’re wanting!)

We had so much fun with our 3D Rainbow Paper Shamrocks that we used the same template to make this gorgeous Rainbow Shamrock String Art!

This was inspired by our popular string heart yarn cards. For this project, we thought it would stand out more to make one large rainbow shamrock, but you can definitely size the shamrock down to cards as well when printing.

You don’t need a lot of materials to make these, just the template, some string, and needle! It’s also a great fine motor and stitching project for kids.

Keep in mind that there will need to be adult supervision for this craft since a needle is involved. This doesn’t mean that your child can’t do it on their own, but make certain that you’re there with them to give them guidance and help. A needle is a sharp object that can really add a poke if not careful!

Rainbow Shamrock String Art – Materials:

While this shamrock craft isn’t hard, you will need to gather up these materials listed below to get started.

How to make this simple shamrock craft:

Instructions:

Step 1. Print out the shamrock template. Using your needle, punch holes all along the shamrock shape, close together about 1/4 inch apart.

Step 2. Cut a length of yarn in one color, thread a needle, and stitch through one hole (tape the other end to the side to keep it in place). and thread across the shamrock shape.

Step 3. Repeat with more colors of yarn in rainbow colors.

Step 4. (optional) You can cut a colored piece of paper in the same shamrock shape and glue to the back to cover up the stitching and tape if you’d like to make it pretty on the backside.

As mentioned above, make certain that the size of the shamrock template is the size that you need for your page. You can try to get it a different size if you want.

Poking the needle holes is going to be something that takes a bit of time. Estimate the distance and try to make them as even as possible.

Start by threading your first color of thread and beginning with your art. Your child may need your help in figuring it out in the beginning but the more that they do it, the more that they’re going to have fun!

See how cool it looks when multiple colors are used? It really starts to add a lot of depth and brightness to the shamrock craft.

The blue color really brings out quite a bit of “pop”, too! I tend to save the darker colors for last and it always works out really well. (But feel free to mix and match it up as you need!)

The end result will look different depending on the colors and order of the colors that are used. But regardless, they’re all beautiful and unique!

Fun ideas and ways to display this Rainbow Shamrock String Art Craft:

Once your child has this shamrock activity created, there are a few different things that can be done.

  • Hang it up on the fridge to display proudly for all to see
  • Frame and hang on the wall as a fun St. Patrick’s Day decoration
  • Cut out and give to someone as a fun gift

It would make a beautiful piece of artwork hanging up in the home or a great gift to give to anyone to brighten their day.

How beautiful and simple is this Rainbow Shamrock String Art project? With just a little bit of time and creativity, this can easily be made in your house as well!
